HDI Directors


Each of our program directors has a history of educational excellence as demonstrated by their amazing track record of teaching and competitive success. We are fortunate to be able to secure their services this summer.


DAVID L. STEINBERG, INSTITUTE DIRECTOR AND DIRECTOR OF SPEECH AND ARGUMENT SKILLS CAMP.
Professor Steinberg is the Director of Debate for the award-winning UM Debate Team since 1990 and faculty advisor for Delta Sigma Rho - Tau Kappa Alpha National Honorary Society. Involved in competitive debate since 1971, Steinberg has coached debate at Middle Tennessee State University, University of Tennessee, Penn State University, George Mason University, and Towson State University. He is a past President of the Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) and co-author of the best-selling textbook Argumentation and Debate: Critical Thinking for Reasoned Decision Making, now in its 12th Edition. Steinberg has taught public speaking to university students as well as corporate managers for 30 years, and has been a cub scout den leader and YMCA sports coach.


ERNIE QUERIDO, CO-DIRECTOR OF C-X POLICY DEBATE LABS.
Ernie was an outstanding high school debater for Sandalwood High School in Jacksonville, Florida, before continuing his debate success at The University of Miami. During more than fifteen years as a successful debate coach, Ernie has served as assistant coach at UM, and has directed several outstanding middle school and high school debate programs in South Florida. His 2007 Pine Crest (FL) teams cleared to the late elimination rounds of numerous national level tournaments, including Greenhill, the Greenhill RR, Wake Forest, Dowling, Florida Blue Key, USC, the Glenbrooks, the USC Round Robin, Redlands, Blake, MBA, Berkeley, the TOC, including the co-championship of the 2007 California Round Robin. He is one of a handful of coaches to have qualified both CXers and LDers to the TOC, having done so in both 2006 and 2007. He is currently writing a policy debate textbook, designed to simplify the event for both novice debaters and coaches who would like to quickly become competitively successful in the activity.


KEVIN (KENNY) MCCAFFREY, CO-DIRECTOR OF C-X POLICY DEBATE LABS.
Kenny is an assistant debate coach for The University of Miami and for Gulliver Preparatory High School. He debated for Gulliver in high school, completed a BA in International Relations at Stanford University, and is currently completing an M.A. in Public Relations at the University of Miami. He has been coaching at Gulliver for four years, and in that time has coached teams to Quarterfinals at the Tournament of Champions, and to late elimination rounds at most major national tournaments.


DR. NICOLE RICHTER, DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC FORUM DEBATE LABS.
Nicole is the Assistant Director of Debate at the University of Miami, where she teaches in the Motion Pictures Program. She just earned her PhD in Communication from the University of Miami this past April.

Nicole debated for Concordia College. During her college career she participated in elimination rounds at several national tournaments (including the NDT) while winning Baylor, Emporia, Macalester, and Loyola, and receiving numerous speaker awards. She has coached high school debate at the Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, Spanish River, and Fargo North, qualifying numerous teams for the Tournament of Champions. She has also been a very successful coach in Public Forum, where her teams from Ransom Everglades have dominated the national circuit, having won the Barkley Forum for High Schools (Emory) for the past two years. Nicole is committed to increasing participation of females and minorities in debate. She works passionately to further critical argumentation in debate because she believes it is a vital aspect of education and student development.


RANDALL MARTINEZ, DIRECTOR OF LINCOLN DOUGLAS DEBATE LABS.
Randall has been coaching successful LD programs for the last 8 years at Christopher Columbus, Our Lady of Lourdes Academy and Celebration High School. Within those years, Randall has coached multiple students to finals at the University of Florida, Harvard, FFL State tournament, and late elimination rounds at the Glenbrooks and the New York City Invitational. Randall has also qualified students year after year to the FFL State Championship, CFL Nationals, NFL Nationals and the prestigious Tournament of Champions. Randall graduated with his B.S. from the University of Central Florida and currently teaches American History, Economics, U.S. Government and Debate at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami.

Randall is the coach of the 2009 FFL Novice State Champion in Lincoln-Douglas.
